Risk Management Plan - Fire


Preventing or alleviating the risk/emergency:
Precautions in Cooking Areas:
  • Wear tight fitting sleeves while cooking
  • Semi-Annual inspections of all cooking equipment including stoves, fireplaces, chimneys.
  • Keep flammable items at least 3 feet away from the stove (i.e. Potholders, dishtowels, etc.)
  • Make sure microwaves have enough room to function properly and heating vents are not blocked in.
  • If oven fire does occur; keep in contained area, do not open doors, call fire department immediately. 
  • Be extremely cautious of cooking materials that could lead to grease fires. NEVER put water on a grease fire. Have baking soda handy for these situations. 

Heating Equipment:
  • Make sure devices have automatic shut off features
  • Make sure there is proper ventilation for all heating features.
  • If space heaters are used, turn off when exiting the room.

Electrical Equipment:
  • Make sure to immediately repair or replace all frayed wires/cords.
  • Avoid extension cords as much as possible and if used do not run underneath carpet.
  • Do not overload sockets
  • Make sure there is plenty of space aloud around major electrical items such as entertainment and speaker systems. 
  • Annual checks of all electrical appliances 
  • Proper installation of all electrical appliance

Smoking:
  • Do not allow smoking in rooms
  • Designate smoking areas where guests and employees can go
  • Make sure smoking areas are cleared of any flammable items at all time.
  • Provide ash trays and places to put out cigarettes.
  • Regular cleanup of smoking areas for any cigarettes that have been left on the ground. 

Alarms:
  • Provide proper alarms and smoke detectors throughout the resort to insure catching the fire or possible cause of a fire immediately. 
  • Never ignore the alarms. 


Reacting in the Event of a Fire:
  • Make sure to have evacuation plan and routes.
  • Make sure guests and employees have maps of fire escape routes.
  • Everyone must exit using their closest escape route
  • NEVER use an elevator 
  • Once guests/employees are evacuated make sure to stand away from the building. 
  • Make sure fire trucks have clear access routes to the building
  • Never re-enter the building until Police and Fire officials have cleared the building.
